Star Trek changed sci-fi's most important rule 60 years ago

Sixty years ago, Star Trek broke the dominant sci-fi convention of portraying extraterrestrials as threats to be feared, exploited or destroyed. Earlier films such as The Day the Earth Stood Still typically depicted alien contact through the lens of suspicion and violence. Star Trek replaced this with a philosophy of peaceful exploration and dialogue with unknown civilisations.
