Cholera bacteria detected in the Baltic Sea — can kill within hours
Researchers have detected Vibrio cholerae — the bacterium that causes cholera — in the Baltic Sea during summer, when water temperatures rise. According to the Polish Press Agency, contact with the bacterium while swimming can prove fatal within a matter of hours. Ships arriving from warmer regions and discharging ballast water are an additional source of the pathogen.
