Somali Pirates Return, But the Multinational Coalition That Stopped Them Is Gone
Somali piracy is resurging after several recent attacks, including the hijacking of three merchant vessels off the Horn of Africa. Multinational naval coalitions suppressed the threat for years, and since 2016 most observers considered it resolved. However, Western navies have since deprioritised the mission, and the coordinated international coalitions that defeated piracy no longer exist, leaving the region vulnerable.
