Boston conservationists find 1729 gravestone of freed Black man Sebastian

Conservationists in Boston have discovered and restored the gravestone of Sebastian, a formerly enslaved man who died free in 1729 at the age of 70. The stone bears his chosen name "Boston," his age, and the death date of February 28, 1728, along with a classic New England death's-head motif. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu called it "likely one of the oldest gravestones of a free Black person in America" in a July 4 speech.
