Bernardo de Gálvez: the Spanish officer who helped Washington win American independence
Spanish officer Bernardo de Gálvez indirectly contributed to George Washington's victory at the 1781 Siege of Yorktown by besieging the British and buying the Continental Army time to plan its pivotal attack. A rare painting of de Gálvez is now on display at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington. His role in the American Revolution has long been historically overlooked.
