China captures first photo of Earth's quasi-moon Kamo'oalewa — a house-sized rock

China's Tianwen-2 probe, launched in 2025, travelled one billion kilometres to reach the quasi-moon Kamo'oalewa (asteroid 2016HO3) and sent back its first photo on July 2 from about 20 km away. The image reveals a small, asymmetrical rock 16–20 metres in diameter. The spacecraft will spend nearly a year studying it with 11 scientific instruments before collecting a surface sample for return to Earth. Some scientists believe the quasi-moon may have been created by a lunar impact over a million years ago.
