Sub-$400 smartphones face sharp decline as AI-driven RAM crisis bites
Research firm Omdia forecasts a significant decline in the sub-$400 smartphone segment due to the ongoing RAM crisis. Memory costs for these devices reached 59% of total bill-of-materials in Q1 2026, up from 32% previously, as AI companies have been stockpiling High-Bandwidth Memory for data centres. Meanwhile, phones priced above $400 are expected to see shipments grow by 5.7% in 2026.
