Australia's under-16 social media ban is failing — platforms not verifying ages

Australia's late-2024 social media ban for under-16s is largely unenforced, according to Reuters testing. Software testers opened 50 accounts across ten services declaring their age as 16, and nine of those platforms — including Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube — failed to request any age verification. Only Kick asked for proof of age; one account on X was served pornographic content despite claiming to be 16.
