Not so long ago, Toyota’s mainstream lineup was nothing but dull, uninspired machinery. These days, the company can barely stop cranking out performance models. The next one could be a sportier take on the Camry, and it may reach showrooms wearing a familiar name.

On June 30, Toyota filed to trademark the name ‘Camry Apex’ with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. While there’s never been a Toyota Camry Apex, the carmaker previously offered an Apex-branded Corolla in the US in mid-2020.

The Corolla Apex was capped at 6,000 units and was based on the Corolla SE and XSE models. While the Apex version didn’t benefit from any power gains, it did receive a lower track-tuned suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, and a more aggressive design.

In addition, 120 of the Corolla Apex models built came equipped with a six-speed manual transmission with automatic rev-matching. While obviously not as exciting as the GR Corolla that came after, the Apex was a sign of things to come.

As always, it’s worth noting that just because Toyota has trademarked the Camry Apex name in the US, that doesn’t mean it’s planning a more thrilling version of the sedan. However, given Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda’s commitment to launching exciting cars, we would not be shocked to see a Camry Apex hitting the market.

If such a car follows in the footsteps of the Corolla Apex, we could expect it to launch with tweaked suspension and upgraded body parts to improve aerodynamics. While certainly not impossible, engine changes would probably be unlikely, as Toyota would probably be eager to reserve more significant upgrades for a potential high-performance GR Camry , if such a car were to ever see the light of day.
