Catnip lotion as effective as DEET at repelling mosquitoes, Uganda study finds
A study conducted in Uganda found that a homegrown catnip (Nepeta cataria) lotion is "just as effective as DEET" at repelling mosquitoes. The active compound nepetalactone, which causes euphoria in cats, also repels insects but had not previously been commercialised. Because catnip is cheap to grow locally, the finding could have significant implications for low-income regions where mosquito-borne diseases are prevalent.
