Study: Church members have more children, religiosity boosts birth rates

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research analysed Finnish demographic data and found that church members have significantly more children than those with no religious affiliation. The findings suggest that declining birth rates may be partly driven by growing secularisation and the mass departure from organised religion. The study offers some of the first quantitative evidence linking church membership to fertility rates in Nordic countries.
