French appeals court shortens Le Pen's ban, allowing presidential run under house arrest

A French appeals court upheld Marine Le Pen's conviction for embezzling European Parliament funds but crucially scrapped her immediate five-year ban on running for office, replacing it with a shorter ban that technically allows her to contest the 2027 presidential election. However, she was sentenced to one year of house arrest and had said as recently as last week that she would not run while wearing an ankle bracelet. The unexpected ruling appeared to confuse Le Pen and National Rally members present in court.
