China EV sales down 13% — manufacturers to ramp up exports to compensate

Chinese EV and plug-in hybrid sales remain 13% below their previous peak, with 1.04 million units sold nationwide in June. The Chinese government is scrapping tax breaks for some EVs from January 2027, adding further pressure. Only three Chinese EV makers — BYD, Xiaomi and Leapmotor — are profitable, pushing others to aggressively expand exports to offset weak domestic demand.
