Batagaika crater grows 1 million m² per year, exposing 650,000-year-old permafrost
The Batagaika crater in northern Yakutia, Russia — known locally as the "gateway to hell" — is expanding by roughly one million square metres per year. The growing depression has exposed layers of permafrost dating back 650,000 years, the oldest in Siberia and second oldest in the world. The crater was first spotted in satellite imagery in 1991 and lies 10 km from the town of Batagay, about 660 km from Yakutsk.
