Larry David quit Seinfeld in 1996 to make a film Roger Ebert hated

Larry David, co-creator and showrunner of Seinfeld for seven seasons, left the hit show in May 1996 at the height of its popularity. He departed to make his own film, which critic Roger Ebert famously panned. David had written many of the show's most beloved episodes, including "The Contest" and "The Puffy Shirt."
