IPN Historian: UPA's Goal Was Ukrainian Independence, Not Massacring Poles
Piotr Gontarczyk, a historian at Poland's Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), argues in an op-ed for Onet that the UPA's primary aim was Ukrainian independence, not the killing of Poles, though he does not minimise the real atrocities committed. He also highlights the historical context of Polish colonisation of Volhynia and forced Polonisation of Ukrainians. Gontarczyk says he views politicians and commentators stirring up anti-Ukrainian sentiment with disgust and disbelief.
