Super Typhoon Bavi devastates Mariana Islands, threatens China and Taiwan

Typhoon Bavi, one of the most powerful cyclones of 2026, reached Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale in just 18 hours. Its eye passed directly over the island of Rota (population ~2,000), where winds of up to 290 km/h destroyed telecoms infrastructure and severely damaged buildings. The US National Weather Service warned the island could be rendered uninhabitable. Bavi is now moving westward toward the densely populated coasts of China and Taiwan.
