Virginia judges can now order speed limiters instead of licence suspension for reckless drivers

From 1 July 2025, Virginia judges can order drivers caught speeding or driving recklessly to install an Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) device as an alternative to licence suspension. The system uses GPS and speed-limit data to prevent acceleration beyond the posted limit. Virginia is the first US state to launch a statewide court-ordered ISA programme; Washington D.C. adopted similar technology earlier.
