Scientists built SpudCell — a synthetic cell that eats, grows and divides like a living cell

Researchers have created SpudCell, a synthetic cell capable of eating, growing and dividing in a way closely resembling real living cells. The study was posted to the bioRxiv preprint server on July 2 and has not yet been peer-reviewed. Co-author Kate Adamala of the University of Minnesota says SpudCell is not alive but could act as a biological factory to produce medicines, fertilisers and plastics.
