Germany Plans €109.7bn Defence Budget in 2027 – One in Five Federal Euros

Chancellor Friedrich Merz's cabinet approved a draft federal budget for 2027 allocating €109.7 billion to defence out of total spending of €555.4 billion – one in every five euros. By the end of the decade, defence is projected to account for nearly one-third of federal spending as Germany races to meet NATO's 5% of GDP target. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said Germany must make up for three decades of military cutbacks "in the shortest possible time".
