JAMA study: GLP-1 drugs via telehealth — fast, easy and with little clinical oversight
A Yale University researcher posing as a secret-shopper patient investigated nearly 50 telehealth websites prescribing GLP-1 drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide for weight loss, finding prescriptions were granted extraordinarily fast and with minimal clinical oversight. The study, published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, highlights how direct-to-consumer telehealth companies have grown rapidly amid demand for GLP-1s, including compounded versions not approved by the FDA. Clinicians and public health experts warn the lax practices could put patients at risk.
