Rip currents explained: Why 140 Baltic beaches are closed

Strong onshore winds trigger rip currents along the Baltic coast, reaching speeds of 2–3 metres per second — fast enough to overpower even Olympic swimmers. Water piled up near the shore escapes through channels between underwater sandbars with deadly force. This hydrological process is the primary reason 140 Baltic bathing spots are currently closed.
