Baltic Sea cyanobacteria bloom in June — earliest ever recorded
In 2025, cyanobacteria bloomed in the Baltic Sea as early as mid-June — a record, given that the phenomenon had previously been observed no earlier than July or August. Dr Justyna Kobos from the University of Gdańsk confirmed that climate change is rapidly accelerating biological processes in the Baltic. Cyanobacteria are hazardous to humans and animals, and their increasingly early appearance poses a serious threat to the Polish coast.
