Smithsonian Air and Space Museum marks 50 years with art-meets-space exhibition

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an expansive exhibition exploring how artists have captured space travel across the decades. The show traces its roots to NASA's art programme (1962–1974), itself inspired by Bruce Stevenson's 1961 portrait of astronaut Alan Shepard, which prompted NASA administrator James Webb to commission artists to document the space age. The programme's former leader, James Dean, later became the museum's first art curator.
