SpudCell eats, grows and divides — scientists create synthetic proto-cell

Scientists have created a synthetic structure called SpudCell that takes in nutrients, grows and divides, mimicking the fundamental behaviours of a living cell. SpudCell is not considered true life — it is a proto-cell built from non-biological components. The research brings scientists closer to understanding how life first emerged on Earth.
