Garton Ash: EU defence clause is no substitute for NATO's Article 5

Historian Timothy Garton Ash warns that believing the EU can replace NATO as Europe's military-political core is a dangerous illusion. He argues that Article 42(7) of the EU Treaty on mutual defence cannot substitute for NATO's Article 5. Europe must reduce its military dependence on the US, but overestimating EU capabilities could be exploited by Putin.
