1.7 million planned satellites threaten astronomy – ESO urges 100k cap

Various companies have filed requests to launch a combined total of 1.7 million satellites in the coming years, which the European Southern Observatory (ESO) warns poses a catastrophic threat to astronomical research and the night sky. An ESO report recommends capping the number of satellites in low Earth orbit at 100,000. The proliferation of satellite mega-constellations already disrupts ground-based telescope observations worldwide.
