Lefebvrists ordain four bishops without papal approval – schism confirmed
The Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) ordained four bishops on Wednesday in Écône, Switzerland, without the approval of Pope Leo XIV. The Pope had urged the Lefebvrist group to abandon the planned ordinations, warning it would constitute an act of schism. It is the first such ordination by the SSPX since 1988, when founder Marcel Lefebvre performed a similar act that led to excommunications.
