Earth could survive the Sun's death — but that's not good news for life

New research suggests Earth could physically survive the Sun's expansion into a red giant in roughly five billion years. However, surface conditions after that event would be completely hostile to any form of life. The planet's survival would therefore not mean the preservation of any biosphere or civilisation.
