It has been a while since Jason Statham starred in a bona fide blockbuster. The Beekeeper was a massive hit at the box office, as evidenced by how quickly a sequel was green-lit. But it grossed only a fraction of what some of Statham's biggest hits were able to. Over the years, Statham has relied mainly on solo action vehicles like The Beekeeper , and the strategy has worked out rather well. However, his most recent movie, Shelter , underperformed at the box office, grossing around $53 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million. It's doing tremendously well on the PVOD and streaming markets, which could have been the ultimate goal all along. But the last time Statham headlined a movie that came close to grossing half a billion dollars at the global box office was three years ago.
