AI and X-ray technology decipher first Herculaneum scroll after 2,000 years

Scientists used X-ray scanning and artificial intelligence to read the contents of a Herculaneum scroll for the first time — an ancient text charred by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The breakthrough opens the door to deciphering hundreds of similar scrolls from the library buried by the disaster that also destroyed Pompeii.
