Perseverance Rover Finds Complex Organic Carbon on Mars Rock Surface

NASA's Perseverance rover detected complex macromolecular carbon directly on the surface of a rock at a site called Bright Angel, on the edge of the ancient Neretva Vallis river channel on Mars. Researcher Ashley E. Murphy of the Planetary Institute in Tucson called it "the shallowest detection of organic matter on Martian surface to date." On Earth, such concentrations of macromolecular carbon typically suggest a biological origin, but scientists say further study is needed to determine its source.
