EU sanctions six scientists over involvement in Navalny poisoning

The EU Council on Friday announced sanctions against six scientists and researchers suspected of involvement in the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The measures include an asset freeze and a travel ban to the EU. Five European governments concluded that poisoning was "highly likely" the cause of Navalny's death in a Russian prison in 2024, with epibatidine — a toxin from a poison dart frog — confirmed in samples from his body. The sanctioned scientists worked in the military sphere and published research on epibatidine synthesis.
