Minnesota scientists build synthetic cells that feed, grow and reproduce

A team from the University of Minnesota announced on 1 July the creation of synthetic cells called SpudCell, which feed, grow, reproduce and compete for nutrients. While not yet fully alive, they display most characteristics associated with life. Stanford biologist Dr Drew Endy commented: "This cell was not born — it was built by humans, yet it functions like natural cells."
