Russia launches digital rouble on September 1 — citizens flee to cash

Bank of Russia governor Elvira Nabiullina announced that from September 1, 2025, Russia's 12 largest banks must process transactions in the digital rouble. Use of the new currency remains voluntary for customers — for now. Despite the rollout, Russian citizens are reacting with distrust, turning to cash rather than embracing the state-backed digital currency.
