Pope's letter to Jefferson Davis delayed US-Vatican diplomatic ties for over a century
A letter written by a pope to Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, contributed to a diplomatic rift between the United States and the Vatican that lasted over a century. Official diplomatic relations between the two were only established in 1984, under President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II, more than two centuries after the Declaration of Independence. The Civil War-era correspondence long stood as a key obstacle to normalisation.
