Pope excommunicates Lefebvrists in first major Catholic split since Great Schism

Pope Francis has excommunicated the Lefebvrists — followers of the Society of Saint Pius X — cutting them off from the Catholic Church. It is the most significant rupture in Catholicism in 972 years, since the Great Schism of Christianity. The traditionalist movement has been in conflict with Rome for decades over liturgy and church authority.
