Viral fossils in plant DNA reveal 300 million years of virus evolution
Researchers from the INRAE and CIRAD institutes discovered tens of thousands of ancient viral traces — so-called viral fossils — embedded in plant DNA. By analysing these fragments, the team reconstructed a viral evolutionary history stretching back 300 million years. The findings represent one of the most detailed glimpses into ancient viruses ever obtained through plant genomics.
