US Civil War: industrial North vs feudal South – a fight over money and slavery
In the mid-19th century the US was starkly divided: the capitalist North was building industry while the South maintained a feudal plantation economy based on enslaved labour. The Civil War was therefore a conflict not only over the rights of Black Americans but also over economic dominance and the country's direction. The two regions held incompatible visions for the nation's future.
