NSW records first suspected H5 bird flu case as virus reaches Australia's east coast
A giant petrel found near Hawks Nest, north of Newcastle in New South Wales, has tested positive for H5 bird flu in what is the state's first suspected case of the disease. Australia's CSIRO is now conducting further testing to determine whether it is the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. If confirmed, it would mark the first detection of H5N1 on Australia's east coast.
