AI data centers in Virginia cause 25% electricity price spike, county asks staff to cut usage

Henrico County, Virginia has asked public sector employees to reduce electricity use after power rates rose by nearly 25%, adding an estimated $5 million to the county's annual electricity bill. County manager John Vithoulkas attributed the spike to the hundreds of AI data centers straining the local grid. Staff have been asked to turn off lights in empty rooms, shut down computers at day's end, close blinds and unplug unused appliances. The region is also experiencing a temporary drought due to low rainfall.
