US Navy seeks alternative to AARGM-ER missile before it enters service

The U.S. Navy is exploring an alternative to its still-in-development AGM-88G AARGM-ER anti-radiation missile through a new programme called the Advanced Emission Suppression Missile (AESM). Requirements for AESM closely mirror those of the AARGM-ER, raising questions about the latter's future. In April the Navy said AARGM-ER was on track for fielding later this year, though a purchasing pause had already been announced for fiscal year 2027.
