Ocean Surface Temperatures Hit Record High in June as El Niño Strengthens

The EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed on July 1 that June 2025 global sea surface temperatures broke the previous record set in June 2024, with the peak reached on June 21. Director Carlo Buontempo warned that the strengthening El Niño could push temperatures into "uncharted territory" in the coming months. Scientists are raising alarms about the risk of extreme weather, flooding, sea level rise and damage to ocean ecosystems.
