UK women from ethnic minorities less likely to receive adequate pain relief in childbirth
A study found that women from minority ethnic backgrounds in the UK are less likely to receive epidurals and adequate pain relief during childbirth. Julie Hammond, a 35-year-old mother of three from Kent, described the traumatic birth of her second child during which she felt excruciating pain throughout the procedure despite medical care being provided. Researchers say the "ethnicity pain gap" persists across the entire healthcare system, from birth to death.
