Earth may host 20 million insect species – three times more than previously thought

New research suggests Earth may be home to as many as 20 million insect species, more than three times the previously accepted estimate of roughly six million. Scientists say earlier counting methods significantly underestimated insect biodiversity. The finding highlights how much of the planet's fauna remains unknown to science.
