Vatican Excommunicates Six Bishops and 600,000 Followers of SSPX

Pope Leo XIV has excommunicated six bishops of the ultraconservative Society of Saint Pius X after they consecrated four new bishops in open defiance of his plea to stop. The Vatican warned that lay believers who "formally adhere" to the breakaway group face the same punishment, affecting around 600,000 followers. The rift between the SSPX and Rome dates back to 1988, when the group's founder carried out unauthorised episcopal ordinations.
