AI-driven layoffs hit degree holders and tech workers hardest, report finds

A California Policy Lab report finds that AI is driving layoffs disproportionately among highly educated workers in AI-exposed roles. Unemployment insurance claims from bachelor's degree holders surged more than 50% between November 2022 and July 2023 — rising from 13,000 to 22,000 per month — following the release of ChatGPT. Claims have since eased to around 16,000 per month but remain above pre-AI levels.
