'Akira' returns to US cinemas in 4K IMAX this summer

Another visit to the streets of Neo-Tokyo is in order. Collider is thrilled to announce that one of the most groundbreaking anime films of all time, Akira , is officially heading back to U.S. theaters through Sony Pictures Entertainment and Crunchyroll . However, this will be no ordinary re-release of the cyberpunk cult classic that helped anime break through internationally and has influenced countless sci-fi classics in its wake, from Cowboy Bebop to Ghost in the Shell and The Matrix . After exploding back onto screens in the U.K. earlier this year, audiences stateside and in Canada will get the chance to re-experience the film in 4K and IMAX this summer, a full six years after the restoration first hit the big screen in 2020.
