Kallas proposes new EU sanctions on Russian arms producers after Kyiv strikes

The European Union will sanction Russian military producers involved in the deadly attack on Kyiv Thursday morning, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced on X.

“Today, I will propose to sanction more entities supporting Russia’s military-industrial complex in response to the strikes,” Kallas wrote. “We keep raising the cost until Russia understands it cannot win”.

The EU’s top diplomat’s announcement comes after Russia attacked Ukraine with a massive wave of missiles and drones, concentrated on the capital Kyiv and killing at least 18 people and wounding more than 80. Kyiv’s Air Force said Moscow launched 74 missiles and more than 490 attack drones, some of which also targeted Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv.

Earlier in June, the EU unveiled a new package of proposed sanctions against Moscow, targeting the country’s banking, energy and trade sectors in an effort to weaken its economy.

Any new measures need to be approved unanimously by EU countries.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cut short his visit to Dublin on Wednesday, warning that his intelligence indicated the Kremlin would soon launch a new large-scale attack on Ukraine. “We know that Putin has been preparing this massive strike against Ukraine for some time,” he said .
