Vatican excommunicates Lefebvrists for ordaining bishops without papal consent
The Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) has again drawn Vatican censure after ordaining bishops without papal approval, prompting the Holy See to impose excommunication. The conflict traces back to the Second Vatican Council and a dispute over what constitutes authentic Catholic Tradition, ignited by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in the 1960s. The Vatican has been unequivocal in its condemnation of the unauthorised ordinations.
